Why Men Don't Write Advice Columns

Dear Walter

I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor's daughter.... I am 32, my husband is 34, and the neighbor's daughter is 22. We have been married for ten years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. He won't go to counselling and I'm afraid I can't get through to him anymore.
Can you please help?

Sincerely
Sheila

Dear Sheila
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors.

I hope this helps.
Walter

I took this off Rishik's fb note, who prolly took it off somewhere too. Just some humour to lighten up the study mood. :)

official start of studying

Some people have asked me how I study. A picture paints a thousand words, or something like that, anyway.

This is not my table at its messiest either. Keyboard real estate is a prime area, you know? So happens I was chatting before I took this photo. =P

and I really miss having a corkboard/something to stick notices on, so I kinda improvised a bit. =D

As for the next picture, you might be wondering, what on earth is that?

It's for me to know, and for you to er.. not know. Suffice to say, the title of the picture is "boulevard of broken dreams". It's deliberately distorted bcos I can only be so evil.

Haircut

Next time I cut my hair, remind me to bring someone who speaks hairdressese, ie hairdresser language in Chinese.

I keep forgetting that my understanding of hair-related terms in Chinese is like.. zilch. The ensuing conversation between the hairdresser(H) and me(J) went like this:
*Conversation is translated from Chinese. "???" represent unintelligible Chinese words.

H: You want to cut?
J: Actually I want to trim.
H: Ok.

H: Your hair is quite thin.
J: Uh-huh.

[After trimming for awhile]

H: ??? ??? ???
J: Huh?
H: Your hair is very ??? ???.
J: Huh?
H: *says louder* You hair is very ??? ???.
J: Er, ok, so..?
H: So, not many people have hair like that.
J: Like what?
H: ??? ???.
*H takes a mirror to shows me how my hair looks like from the back*
J: *looks just like my hair to me.* Er.. er.. If my hair is not like that, then what should it be like?
H: Oh, other people's hair normally would be ??? ???.
J: Oh, issit? Er.. aiyah anything lar.
H: OK, done.
*H starts to remove the cloth around my neck*

Needless to say, I was kind of confused.

Next time I go, I'll pretend that I don't know Chinese, I wonder if that would help.

Imagine if I go in and say in an upperclass British accent:
"Aunty, I would like to trim my hair. No, I don't speak Mandarin."

Nah, prolly not believable. My skin tone is too dark, but I don't look Malay either leh.

"Aunty, boleh awak menggunting rambut saya?"

---
But what the heck, my haircut only cost me $3.80.

Free samples!

Have to review this website for the zone mag - basically it's a Singapore based free sample website. When you join you're awarded 6 points (to redeem 3 samples). You have to verify your address (they managed to find one-north! Joy to the world!) and pay a small postage fee via immediate ATM transfer or iBanking. I had to pay SGD$2 for my samples.

Samples include cosmetics, face products, perfume, body wash, etc. It's more tailored towards the women (as you will notice if you look at their "about us" section), but there are samples for men too. My guy friend who referred me got some facial wash or something, his samples arrived fine in the mail, so it should be quite reputable.

Granted, their English ain't so good (I would LOVE to edit their English), and their web interface ain't that great either, but for us very web-savvy people, that shouldn't be a problem. English-wise, well, what can I say? We're in S'pore. :(

Interested? Click the image above to register (and help me get some points too :) and try it out yourself!

P.S. The final verdict will come when I get my samples.

Slumdog Millionaire

(blogging frm email now - Note to self: add in labels later)

I just finished watching Slumdog Millionaire! I actually obtained a copy quite a few months back, but never felt like watching it until today. Well, I was watching Whose Line Is It Anyway on my laptop on the train ride home, but the episode finished at around City Hall. Since I didn't have time for another episode, I decided, hey, why not watch a movie? (I know, seems like faulty reasoning right?)

I tried to watch UP, but had problems with the sound. My only other option was Slumdog, so I thought, hey, why not?

Wah, it's riveting man. If I could get away with it I'd probably have tried to continue watching it while walking back home from the MRT. But I also believe in doing my part for road safety. =) But once I got home, wah, straight away went up to my room to continue watching.

Well most of you should have already watched the movie, or at the very least, heard about it. If you haven't, the movie is about a teenager from the slums of Mumbai who managed to get on the Millionaire show (to win 20 mil. rupees). When the movie starts, he has already correctly answered all the questions up to the last one. Over the course of the movie, his life in the slums is revealed through flashbacks, and how the unique experiences in his life have coincidentally equipped him with the answers to most of the questions on the Millionaire show.

And of course, there is the prerequisite love interest. What movie would be complete without one?

As for the finer plot details, go watch the movie yourself if you haven't already!!! It's very good!

There has been some controversy (esp. by Indians, which is understandable) over how the movie depicts the slums of India. Well, after taking HP804 - Coping with Cultural Transition, it's easier for me to keep an open mind about it and not to stereotype the whole of India as being impoverished and all that. I guess if you take the point of view that with the movie, the director is actually trying to highlight that such conditions exist (be it in India or in other parts of the world where there are slums), and factor in artistic license - movies always exaggerate, don't they? then you're fine.

Also, I really really like the ending song, Jai Ho. People might be more familiar with the PCD's version "Jai Ho (You're My Destiny)", but the original version is in Hindi (and Urdu and Spanish too, according to Wiki) The end of the movie has a very bollywood feel to it, with all the cast coming out to mass dance to this song. It also helps that Jai Ho was the mass dance song in my church's HM'09 camp! Ok, I confess, I'm a closet dancer! It's really fun and the beat's good to groove to -- Bollywood style. Listening to the song (especially accompanied by visual input of everyone dancing) really makes u wanna get up and dance too! =D

I think with minor adaptations, it wld make a good TJ mass dance song! *grin*

OK, time to do more serious work. Ciao!

P.S. It also helps that the male lead grows on you -- I think I'm attracted to the more sensitive type, as opposed to the macho type. Hmm..

Template

I wanna make a link at the bottom of my blog page that says "older entries", is it possible without Major modifications to the code on my template?

I'm aiming this question at tech whizzes like *coughs* G.. *coughs*

U know, like those they have for the standard templates.. "older entries", "newer entries".

If it's too difficult, forget it! =X

Malay!

Recently started to play B$ again. This is bad timing! Exams are coming, more importantly, my Malay oral is coming, but I totally don't feel prepared.

Oh yes, when I surf random blogs (over the course of my B$ game), I realise that Singaporean blogs tend to sound the same. Even for the singlish-less blogs, I can guess that the author's a Singaporean. Really lor. :)

Ok, tomorrow's my Malay oral, so maybe I should practice some:
(mouse over some words to see their meaning :)

My favourite eating place. (Kegemaran gerai makan saya?)
Saya suka makan nasi itik di Gerai Makan Dunman Road. Makanan di situ murah dan sedap. Sepinggan nasi itik harga dua setengah dolar. Saya selalu makan di situ dengan keluarga saya pada hujung minggu. Kami juga suka makan laksa, mee udang dan telur dadar tiram di situ. Ia sangat sedap!!

Jiran saya (My neighbour -- i dunno my neighbours, gonna pretend that I stay at 102 sunbird...=P)
Jiran saya nama Encik Tan. Dia bekerja sebagai jurutera. Kadang kala, dia akan berniaga di China. Isteri Encik Tan seorang guru. Dia mengajar kimia di Sekolah Menengah Tanjong Katong. Dia ada ramai pelajar.

Encik Tan ada dua orang anak. Anak sulung nama SY. Dia berumur tiga belas tahun.

Saya selalu menghabiskan masa dengan mereka.

Keluarga Saya
-- Too lazy to write out. Let's see..
Kimia - Chemistry
Fizik - Physics
Ilmuwan - Scientist
Maybe I can just adopt my "neighbour"'s family. *nods*

Estet Perumahan Saya (my housing estate - slightly fictitious to protect my own privacy)

Kegemaran buku saya "Jurassic Park".

Saya suka tinggal di Marine Parade.
